Norman was born in Perth, but grew up in the Borders town of Galashiels. He was educated at Wester Langlee Primary School and Galashiels Academy before going to the University of Edinburgh.

Leaving university after one year of a science degree he took up employment with Gleno Asbestos Ltd. as Assistant Quality Controller. After eight years in industry he was called to the Ministry and began his training at New College in the University of Edinburgh. There he gained an honours degree in Christian Ethics and Practical Theology, and a Diploma in Ministry.

His faith journey began in late childhood when his parents were invited to church by a neighbour. Around this time, he joined the Boys' Brigade. This meant BB Bible Class most Sunday mornings at St Paul's Church. At age fifteen he joined the Youth Fellowship at St. John's Church - where his parents were members. At age seventeen he became a Christian and shortly after became a full member of St. John's Langlee. Whilst in Edinburgh he was a member of Mayfield Church.

At Mayfield Church he was part of Youth Fellowship and then a Young Adult Group. He became a BB officer. He served on the Congregational Board, before being ordained as an elder in 1984. This just happened to be Sunday 1st April 1984 - some have suggested it was an appropriate date.

That same year he began five years of both academic and practical training for Ministry. In 1989 he was licensed and became Assistant Minister at Barclay Church in Edinburgh.

Norman is married to Karen and has three children: Sarah, Eleanor and Jamie. He has two grandsons: Jack and Lucas. Outside family and work his interests include fishing, cycling and a passion for cars (dare we say it: fast cars!!!?). He enjoys music (mostly what is referred to as prog rock), plays trumpet, cornet and flugelhorn, and reads an awful lot of science fiction (sometimes a lot of awful science fiction!)
